They say when you learn how to ride a bike you never forget.
I rode my bike on the road today for the first time in years and I have to
agree that they’re right.
I remembered how to ride and I also remembered the huffing
and puffing, the pounding heart at the top of a hill, the sweat running in to
my eyes, the creaking knees, and the burning thighs.
I also remember the wind rushing past my ears on the fast
downhill, the blessed solitude, and the sense of freedom I felt when I rode my
bike as a child. I remember the camaraderie of another cyclist calling out “are
you OK” when I was stopped and I also remember the feeling of accomplishment of
imagining a route in my head and completing the ride, and the joy of topping
the last hill before reaching home.
Overall the pluses were greater than the minus and after
getting home and having a shower I can’t wait to go again. Also new for me
since the last time I rode is putting the exercise time in My Fitness Pal (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/) and
adding calories to my daily intake and having said that it’s time to search the
fridge for the beer I’ve had chilling the last couple of days. It’s my way of
patting my own back.
