I love to read and I always have something to read and I
like paper books (yes, I’m a tree killer type of reader), either hardbacks or
paperbacks; not electronic books. I have read books on my wife’s Kindle,
however I much prefer a paper book.
There are authors I follow – John Sandford, CJ Box, Michael
Connelly, Robert Crais, Lee Child, Ace Atkins, Carl Hiaasen - to name a few. If
those authors write a book I’m going to read it. I also like discovering new
authors and then reading all of their books. I just discovered Kirk Russell (the
author, not the actor) and Brad Smith. I usually get the books from the public
library. It’s cheaper and I figure I’m paying for it anyway.
Last night I started a new book and I can’t read it. I’m not
going to mention the title or the author because I don’t want to ruin the book
for anyone or for the author; not that
that many people read me or this blog. The story line is about a married couple.
The wife has cancer and the insurance only pays for generic drug treatments,
which isn’t available. So the husband steals an ID and files a false claim for
the branded drug. I didn’t get very far into the book at all. I couldn’t read
about the treatments and what the wife was going through. It may seem trite but it hit too close to
home for me. There is still a small chance I have something and even though most
indicators are pointing away from any sort of malignancy I just couldn’t read
the book. And I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to read something along those
lines.
Off to the library today to look for something else, or a
re-read.
